LADIES AND GENTLEMEN..

DON'T EVER GET IT TWISTED.

THIS IS WHAT IT NEEDS TO COME BACK TO...ROCKING TOGETHER, OVER IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT.
IF I COULD GET MORE OF THIS INSTEAD OF THIS SHIT I'D HAVE A BETTER ATTITUDE TOWARDS TODAYS "HIP HOP" ...IF YOU EVEN WANT TO CALL IT THAT.

Now he's going to jail for some real dumb shit.
Oh... the irony.

On a sidenote...seems in the music world maaaaad people are dropping like flies.

EXTRA P

Last Saturday I was booked alongside The Large Professor by the hommies Knife and Tommee for a night they've been doing here in Boston called "FRESH PRODUCE". One of the longest running hip hop nights in town. It was fun to play 80's and 90's hip hop ( I rarely seem to do that nowadays) with some funk and breaks mixed in. Overall it was a good night...some cornball asked me to play cassidy??!! uhhhh no! Meanwhile I was dropping Nice N Smooth, Superlover Casanova R.U.D., WuTang, Gangstarr, BDP, Kane and that type of shit. Some people just don't pay attention.

Heres some footage of the mad scientist flowing over Live at the BBQ

SATURDAYS !

I've yet to do a post on my Saturday residency at Middlesex here in Cambridge. Those not from the Boston area...its basically like going from Manhattan to Brooklyn. If you want top 40 radio garbage from today, head to any club in downtown Boston.
If your looking for an alternative you go to Cambridge.
I've been doing this party for almost 5 years, and its usually a good time...minus the line that wraps around the block.
A while back I had Kenny Dope come out to rock a special 45 set...with no promotion at all, ended up being over capacity.
A night to remember...Dopeman tore it down.

Funny that in my own hometown I barely get any love, or notice from our local rags ( stuff at night, improper etc) for this sat night !
Not that I dont get love from promoters/ djs in the Bean and Internationally but... I am like...the Grampa out this biiyyatch..almost 19 years kicking ass in clubs here in Boston.

Shouts to 7L, Braun Johnson ( BLADERUNNERS ) Frank White, Lazee Boy, Ms.Thang, Gucci Vuitton, Rick Rude, Dj Bruno, Kc, Supreme 1, SoulClap, Knife & Tommee, Incognito,Pete at Goodlife, Bradford James, Edgard....and the rest of yall putting in work.

Usually a Sat night crowd consists of your core followers who know how you get down, and your sidewalk crowd....
I take no requests, and you will not here anything from anybody with "young" or "lil" in their name. Deal. You'll live.

Early evening shot...

ALIVE AND WELL

Yea...I know, it's been a while right since I last checked in. Alot has been happening, in short.........
Obama is the funky president, z share shit the bed, went to Japan, rocked Southport, airlines fucked up flights so Amir and I missed Benji B's Deviation gig in London. It got quite cold out and I'm not liking it.

Ok, ok.....
Japan was incredible, the hospitality was 2nd to none. Shouts to Ken Hidaka at Grunt Style and Yoshihiro Susa....big shouts to the homie Dimitri from Paris who happened to join us for dinner and make it out to the club that night.
Dj Muro killed it...rocking doubles of just about every 45...in the manner of his mix tapes (or our On Track tapes/cds) He even had one of his boys putting away each 45 in a neatly stacked perfect little pile...I need one of those crate boys just so I can bring vinyl out.

Then after Japan....back to the states, 2 days after that ..back to London. Getting there was a mess. FUCK CONTINENTAL !
They had us stuck on the runway for 3 hours. Sitting. New plane. While all this was going on, we were supposed to be spinning at Deviation with Benji. NOT !

I kicked it with my peoples in London, then headed to Manchester to hit some record spots....then to Southport.
I got very sick during my set at Southport, had to cut that a bit short...but I aint going out like that...I trooped it.
I managed to squeeze in 2 sets....I took up some of Amir's time. The first was pure disco, nothing but edits...then I played some r&b, 80s boogie, and shit like that. We left at about 7 am.....then Dave (Trus'me) drove us to the airport.
Shouts to Manchesters Trus'me, the crew at Fatcity, Gilles Peterson, Legendary Greg Wilson, Benji B, King Britt, Phil Asher (sorry for spilling my beer on you) Alex from Jazzanova, Ben Westbeech (up on Ontracks since way back) taking it back with that... Andre Torres @ WAXPOETICS, Toshio from Tokyo/A1 nyc....Big ups to Chesca and Ebo...London represent !!!!!!

Since i've been gone I see z-share links dont allow yall to dl anything, I will fix that. In the meantime, heres some pix from my past travels and a mix we did for BBC ALLSTAR MIX back in the summer.

Amir plays some classic 45s....a solid set to just rock to.
This mix is all live one lp cut and the rest are 45s for my mix, with treats from Keni Burke, Unit Band, Fred Prescott, Frank Eddie and many more disco/modern gems...check it out.

DEAR SUMMER

As always, summer goes by too fast for me. The 08' summer was pretty good to me, mostly chillin with my people, bbqs, relaxing, spinning and making the most of it. Heres a bunch of pics I took on my iphone over the months. I think its time for me to get a real camera.
This was July 4th, I snapped a bunch of these from a rooftop party directly underneath the fireworks, one street away from the charles river here in Boston.

Heres a shot from inside the booth at Love

Marthas Vineyard...the hurricane made waves about 20 ft, the water was about 70 degrees...the best time ive ever had at the beach.

Every summer the city of Boston along with my homie Lino from the the Floor Lords puts on the citys peace concert at city hall.
This year Chubb Rock, DAS EFX, and one of my favorite rap groups of all time..EPMD. Eric and Parrish still got it after all these years, opening the set with "It's my thing"...soon as you heard that helicopter intro...it was a wrap, the crowd went nuts.
All of Boston comes out to this event..every hood, old and young, Although the pouring rain gave us some minor set backs, all of us stayed and it cleared up...allowing those who were not under the tent to dry off.

Im not gonna bore yall with all the other events that i did....as we head into the fall its time to focus more on music.
We will be at the Southport Weekender in Manchester UK in November, also we will be in Tokyo, Japan Oct 31st (halloween in the states) spinning alongside legendary record collector/producer DJ Muro....Really looking forward to these events.

Please check out the monthly radio show we got going on ( i plugged it before ) at www.spinemagazine.com
lots of good music every month.

Who knows when i will post again, but it will most likely be with an edit of some sort.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

In August of 2004 I was flown out to L.A. to spin the bboy summit, And what an amazing trip it was. Crews from all over the world come to this event, its like a week long event...and anybody whos into bboy/bgirl culture is there. All the legends like my fam The Floor Lords/ Flava Squad
Grandmaster Caz, and D.S.T were there spinning as well. At one point D.S.T drops Beyonce's crazy in love !?! Now no disrespect to a dj of that stature...but my man...its a bboy jam. Needles to say Asia got on the mic and fixed that real quick.
Now, on with my trip...I called the homie J-ROCC (BEATJUNKIES) to let him know id be in town, so he invited me up to power 106
for Friday Night Flavas (r.i.p) with Mr.Choc, Truly Odd, and C minus. I didnt have serato at the time, so this was all vinyl. I remember getting really really stoned off some cali kush...never do that before going up to the radio !
J-Rocc was kiling shit as usual...whats a trip is people always think Amir and I are from NYC..when we are from Dorchester/Roxbury...
I played joints from Buari, Eddie Grant, Rimshots and some other shit....really all I brought was bboy related records minus a few mellow joints...I think this was also the 1st time Matt Cassell got any burn on the radio...after I played "In My Life" jaws dropped and Mr. Choc was like ...."what the fuccckkkkk izzz that" ? Well, yall should know about Matt by now, after comping that jam on BBE. So, I stumbled on to this mix that somebody had recorded...thank god cuz I never heard it til today !
Anyway heres the link

Im off to nyc to spin this friday at APT...in case your reading and maybe in the area.

TEE DOT OH !

Yeeeaaaa....thats right TORONTO. I had not posted anything about this gig for the simple fact that I really had no pics, or any of the audio that was recorded that night. So, now I got the audio to share with y'all. It was a great night, the bboys out there are also down with my fam from Boston, legendary Floor Lords. Shouts to all the heads that rolled to this show, danced and got loose. Shouts to the Heavyweight crew for having us...a lovely time was had, hope to come back out again.
Heres both my set and Amirs...live in the mix.

MIIIIICROO WAAAAVE

Last week I spun at apt. in NYC. I have spun there many times, always downstairs...dating back to when Bobbito Garcia first started doing his party..when the turntables were still on the bar. After that Amir and I have rocked with Chairman Mao, and Big Rich Medina.
So Sal (LIQUID LIQUID) hit me up and wanted me to rock upstairs on wed. Turns out aside from the soundsystem, I prefer the room upstairs..its much more open and the back deck (weed heads) is dope for the summer.
Basically I have never seen that room as thick as it was when I rocked...lots of fly females dancing and the fellas were really getting loose. From jams like Midas Touch to Eric Burdon & WAR's spill the wine. The highlight of the night had to be when JUJU (BEATNUTS) was dancing to what is in my opinion, one of the classiest, illest, indie disco 12"s ever made (micro wave boogie) JuJu then tells me its his 12 year old daughters favorite record...guess thats what happens when you got a funky ass dad. Later in the night Jeru dropped by and I proceeded to run Beatnuts classics and one of my fav Jeru versus ever ( im the man). Pop Master Fable (RSC) was also in the house...Sorry I made you late...and yes it was for a good cause ! the poppers were getting down to D-train and countless other classics.
All in all I'd say this was the most fun I've had spinning there...you know when you have those nights when your just on fire ? That was one of'em. Oh yea...sorry to homeboy who wanted to hear Jay-z "Allow me to re-introduce myself" ( in his own words) cuz he's a "dancer". Isnt that jam a bit slow for dancing ?
Heres the og yellow Skip Jackson Micro wave Boogie 12"...and I saved my set from that night as well.

I just got back from NYC and spun at APT as well as LOVE. I will blog that later this week..I saved sets from both nights.
I stumbled upon a new video of last years BBE 11.5 party that was at canvas in London.
For those who went you know it was craaazzzy...this years should be just as good.
Something for everybody at these parties..every room had such amazing energy.
I will be spininng as well as Amir this September.
My man Al Kent will be spinning this year as well as...and I always enjoy his sets.
Disco heads already know..We dont allow...no sittin' down in here.
See for yourself.

ALL WE NEED IS LOVE

Yup...we are spinning at LOVE in NYC Thursday July 10th.
I have yet to spin at this venue, from what I hear the soundsystem is incredible.
Expect lots of disco and deepness. Im sure Amir will be dropping some latin fire...Looks like a promising night.
Interested in hearing Mike Simonetti's set. Shouts to JOE RO for hooking it up.
Hope to see some NYC heads in the house.

BARELY BREAKING EVEN

Ok...so the new volume of OFF TRACK is out now in the U.S..and has been out in Japan and Europe for a few weeks.  Volume 2 is 2 discs, my side is all uptempo disco , with lots of edits and for the most part unearthed jams. I think it has a warm vibe ripe for the summer..a recurring theme around here if  you couldnt tell.
Amirs side is all African joints.. ranging from funk, to disco. All quite rare and tasty.
I mixed both my side and Amirs side live. I feel it represents what your gonna hear me sounding like in the club. So please, if you love old music thats new and fresh..cop this!
The cd is mixed, and the vinyl is a triple pack containing edits and jams that are NOT on the cd!!!
Also theres a promo 45 with 2 jams that are only available on the 45.
Available on itunes, dustygroove, amazon and where ever else you can think of.
Check it out here at BBE

SUMMER TIME

Yessss! Its been too long. I love when it gets real hot. I wish it lasted as long as our winters do here on the north east coast. It was like 98 degrees (35 celcius) today with the sun shining and around my way, lots of fire hydrants were open and all the kids were cooling off. Summer time is allllll about coolin' out, bbqs, jams pumping and just making the most of it. So to celebrate all this warmth..heres another edit. This was done a while back, and recently I heard another edit somebody else had done of it. You know the ol' sayin'...if you cant say anything nice...?
Well I thought I'd share my version of it.

People..people.. I know I dont update my blog as much as I should but..when you download, feedback is always appreciated... Thanks to all who have hit me up.

MOODY

Heres an edit I whipped up very quickly. Perfect for the upcoming warm summer weather.
The og has alot of bad parts. I stretched it waaaaayyyy out. I love this groove, its so moody. I like to keep most of my edits very simple, and organic. Not that I dont like fx and filters, but then its no longer an edit...is it ? At that point I'd want to add drums and 808 which would make it more of a new disco/ house track. As my homie Al Kent would say "BOOM CHI BOOM". Enjoy.

Pretty Purdie

I got to play with one of my heros...the one and only Bernard Pretty Purdie. Since I started drumming at age 4 ( i had to stop when I was 10) Its only natural that I'd be so amped on this event. We had dinner and my man is super cool...i dont really get starstruck , but i was eating with a LEGEND ! I asked him so many questions, that had him thinking about sessions he'd seemed almost to have forgot.
Redbull put it together..shouts to COPPO! and there was no rehearsal at all..this was all off the head. The set up was a bit shakey..and im not a scratch nerd so it is what it is. I had multis for some well known tracks and did passes with out any drums, so Purdie could rock over them..this is what happened that night. Oh yea..I shamelessly rocked a kon & amir t shirt.
Heres some video

MUNICH

Munich was doooope. Always good to see Florian Keller ...super nice guy, great dj, not to mention some incredible records.
We had dinner with Theo, then went to the party.
We had a blast playing that night, toward the end we were going 3 for 3 , from John Gibbs Trinidad to Salt's hung up...lots of drunken Germans and you know the party dont stop there.....

6 AM ...
We then went to a bar with a tree growing inside of it !!, that had this bomb-ass mac n cheese and onion jumpoff !

LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA !

I didnt know what to expect out here...

BARCELONA

Al played some dope edits, basically..you think of a disco song..and im willing to bet he did an edit for it.
Rahaan droppped one of Als cuts from his MDO release on BBE and it sounded..as they say in U.K "ace" Check him out @ www.myspace.com/milliondollarorch
I played some real crowd pleasing joints..and went off into a philly set.
I also got to meet Trus'me ( www.myspace.com/trusme ) while digging at beat n rhythm...who came by that night and blessed me with his lp. Look out for the project we are doing. Hopefully dropping sometime next year.

Who knows when I update again, I just had the fortune of playing with the legendary BERNARD PURDIE...im waiting on some audio and video from that night...also did APT in NYC with CHAIRMAN MAO and AMIR...Im off to Delaware tomorrow.
I always feel as if I should put a mix for every update...but that seems a bit absurd huh ?
Until next time...
